Gum Disease

Maheshi Da SilvaGum disease (periodontal disease) is the term given to inflammation, soreness or infection of the tissues that surround your teeth.

There are two main types of gum disease – gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gum disease is caused by plaque, the soft, sticky bacteria that builds up on teeth every day, it is the major cause of tooth loss in adults and has been linked to other general health conditions such as diabetes.

Most adults will suffer with some form of gum disease and this is noticed by your gums looking red and swollen and bleed when being brushed.

Gum disease in most people develops slowly, and the good news is that it can be slowed down to a rate that allows you to keep your teeth for life with proper care.
